Marble Blast Ultra Patch To Fix Bugs And Bring Multiplayer Maps.

Thrills Killa from K1lla’s Xbox Domain has informed us that there will soon be a patch available that will bring new content to the smash arcade hit Marble Blast Ultra. Go after the jump to find out just how this patch will affect the game.

Thrills Killa recently interviewed Pat Wilson, the lead programmer for Marble Blast Ultra. The interview revealed that a patch will be arriving soon that will fix some known bugs and improve gameplay. The patch will fix:

Friends Leaderboard bug: This was reported very early on and will be fixed.
Crash exploit: There is a way to crash a server on several maps. This will be fixed.

Removing the advantage of dropping during a multiplayer game to protect your rating. This is very destructive behavior for the game because it breaks up servers. It also allows the host to unfairly effect the game for all other people in the server should they decide to kick the server back to the lobby to prevent a stat hit. We brainstormed many solutions to this and discussed it quite a bit, because we don’t want to provide a bad play experience for people who want to leave a server for other reasons. The implementation we chose, I feel, strikes a good balance, and I think it will have a positive effect on the game.

When you re-spawn in a multiplayer game, you should be facing the gems.

The HUD should inform everyone of voice activity so that abusive players can be identified by the host and kicked from the game.

Shadowing on the text for the scoreboard on the HUD to make it more readable on all levels.

Also of note is the addition of a whopping eleven multiplayer maps! Yes, you read right: 11 maps! All for the whopping cost of ZERO Microsoft Points! Downloadable content doesn’t get much better than that, folks! Pat Wilson also describes the multiplayer maps in a little more detail:

"I won’t list them all, but we got to really play with the gameplay even though we kept the game-type the same. Playing “Spires” is very, very different than all other multiplayer levels. All the gems are at the top of high-friction covered spires and platforms, and all the powerups are on the ground. The strategy is totally different, and it requires players to improve their flying, falling, and marble control skills. Alex also crafted a multiplayer level, “Bowl”, that mimics the skiing movement that makes single player levels like “Black Diamond” so much fun. “Blast Club” is another level in the style of “King of the Marble” but with a larger, more varying playing surface, and a different central conflict point."

Wilson did not reveal a release date for the patch, but instead said that:

It is really important to us that this update does nothing but improve the experience people have with Marble Blast Ultra. Testing these fixes is of the utmost importance and is something we are taking very seriously.

Wilson also said that Marble Blast Ultra fans will soon be able to download gamerpics.

Now THIS is how downloadable content should be done… eleven new maps for free that will seriously change the way the game is played. We should all applaud the MBU team’s hard work.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 Interview

Jump! Tony Hawk is a skateboarding franchise by himself. He can literally just retire and go fish somewhere, and he'd still have enough money to give University-tuition money to his grandchildren. But no, he wants to skate, he's even got this skateboarding game coming out: Tony Hawk's Project 8. Brian Bright, Proj. Director, and Chris Parise, Senior Producer, was interviewed and we got the info right here! Skaters galore and more! The usual skaters are back: Burnquist, Mike V., P-Rod, R. Mullen, and Bam Margera. New blood roster includes: Dolan, Lyn-Z Adams, and Nyjah Huston. There's still some in the works so we'll wait for their names. New Feature is "Nail The Trick." The game slows down, zoom into the skater's feet, and then what goes from there's up to you! Creating tricks on the fly is a piece of cake with this one. Unfortunately, there won't be any "classic levels" here. The "Classic Mode" like Skate and Combo Letters, Secret Tape and High Score challenges will still be here. As for the ones who want to be a legend of their own, besides having a male or female bod, you can have a kid bod as well. Imagine, a kid kicking ass on the grind! The goal system provides an AM, PRO, and Sick difficulty level, that'll give novices and experts the challenges they need. The graphics and physics on this one is just as next-gen as the console themselves. The render engine is a complete overhaul of THAW on the 360. They now have rendering support for the whole environment. This will make the game look more realistic than in the past. Metal, grass, water, and glass shaders let's the players see cracks on the concrete walls and windows. Havok physics allows ragdoll bails, blending with the animation. Controllable bail is a cool feature. It allows the player control how they fall. Instead of falling into a ditch, you could try falling infront of a speeding truck. Mo-capping Tony Hawk and the other skaters will definitely make this game move as realistic as possible. So how Tony moves in the game looks exactly like how he would in real life. The skater will now be able to react dynamically with the environment. Unfortunately, no Xbox Live Vision support for the meantime. Until then, we'll see you in the concrete jungles...

New Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy Screenshots

More eye candy from Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, we bring you - this time hot off the press in full Xbox 360 quality. Relive memorable scenes and iconic characters from (most of these shots), A New Hope The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, rendered in plastic-block LEGO fashion. (The only thing missing from these, wethinks, are the lightsabers, but throwing in Jabba the LEGO Block was nice).

The screencaps don't exactly demo the fun stuff you can mess around with in that LEGO galaxy far, far away (like putting Threepio's head on Yoda's body, or something), but it's cute the way the movies get LEGO-fied in these shots. They even capture Leia's cinnamon-bun hairstyle, Episode IV Luke's naive youthfulness (too easy with LEGO) and Jabba's... er, bulk... faithfully (Would have been nice to see an Episode VI Luke, though).

Until then... In September the game's release will be, young Padawans.

New DVD Patchmod from Divineo

When it comes to patchmods for Xbox 360, Team Underdog owns with its NME-360 v1.0. However, Divineo came up with a new product that looks like their initial edition of the DVD patchmod chips, not to mention it being cheaper at $24 only. Named Aladdin2 Mod360, this product is available in two drives and both have a low wire count: 4 for Toshiba Samsung drive and 11 for Hitachi-LG. Aside from auto booting original games, this mod automatically boots NME360 type backups and "those that are in dual format (xtreme/NME360)" as well. Once it detects an original game, Mod360 will disabling patching making it excellent for Xbox Live. Keep in mind though that backups should be in NME360 format and the book-type of the DVD+R DL can be either DVD+R or DVD-ROM. For diagrams of both drives, click on the links below:

Another Judge In Favor of Video Games

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the booming gaming community finds another ally in Judge James Brady as he rules against a law that bans the sales of violent video games. This is not the first time as other states like Minnesota, Illinois, California and Michigan had similar bans blocked in the courts. U.S. District Judge James Brady referred to such laws as invasion of the First Amendment, then issued an injunction. According to him, "Depictions of violence are entitled to full constitutional protection." In a similar event, a federal judge issued the state of Louisiana to pay three business groups including Entertainment Software Association more than $510,000 as legal fees. Governor Kathleen Blanco then, after losing the court battle, appealed to parents to protect their children. "I'm calling on all parents to diligently monitor the video games that their children are allowed to play. If the courts can not protect our children, then we need to do it by rejecting the merchant of violence." Those states that attempt to impose a ban argue that video games should be treated differently because its interactive nature encourages violence and it can be psychologically harmful to minors. The law sought to imposed both fine of up to $2,000 and one year in prison if the video game is proven to be appealing to a morbid interest in violence, patently offensive to an adult and the games are lacking in artistic, political or scientific value. All above mentioned basis were nullified and deemed insufficient by the court one way or the other.

Team Blackbolt Plans to Launch MC360 v1.0 Soon

Team Blackbolthas announced that they are nearing their goal of producing the MC360 v1.0 for the Xbox and that it will finally be out of the beta phase soon. The team would be unveiling the new features of v1.0 which will set it apart from the current beta version. They also announced that they won't be releasing a new beta for MC360, since at the moment, they claim that MC360 works fine with the current T3CH builds.
To refresh your memory, MC360 or Media Center 360 is a skin User Interface (IU) for the Xbox Media Centre (XBMC). It's a free homebrew media application for the Xbox, but you need a modded Xbox to use XBMC as well as MC360.
In their website, Team Blackbolt spilled the news that, "We will have more news in the coming weeks about what 1.0 will feature different from current beta's and then hopefully we will be done in time for the final 2.0 release of XBMC", suggesting that MC360 v1.0 may be really on its way out of the beta version.

Lumines Live Under Microtransaction's Thrall?

Today, GamingBits reports that OXM's review of upcoming puzzler Lumines Live indicates the downloadable arcade game will have additional content for an additional price, first revealed in our XBLA Preview.

Gamers are like to fork about 1,200 Microsoft points ($15) to download the game, which comes complete with a robust multiplayer mode. To advance past a certain point in the Mission and VS. CPU modes the game requires you to purchase the Mission and VS. CPU packs for 400 points ($5) and 300 points ($3.75), respectively.

The base game will ship this fall with 12 skins in Challenge Mode, all the modes mentioned above, as well as additional content downloadable via Xbox Live Marketplace. Then, within an unspecified time, several more game packs will be released. These will include three package types: 1) a Music/Video pack, 2) a Mission/Puzzle/Skins pack, and 3) an Advanced Difficulty pack.

The core game will include Warner Brothers' artists such as Madonna. The addition Music/Video pack will feature more artists and seamlessly integrated interactive videos. The Mission/Puzzle/Skins pack will offer gamers new mission types, new puzzles and additional skins to complement the experiences. And the Advanced Difficulty pack will give hardcore addicts a run for their money.

GC 2006: Brothers in Arms Teaser

As Michael Jackson likes to say, Ubisoft is so "devilish." With Brother's In Arms: Hell's Highway oh yes, indeed it is. Devilish by releasing a three-minute teaser that gives you just enough to whet your whistle and yet not nearly enough. Devilish in making us wait for it, making you wait for it, and by forcing us invoke the powers of Michael Jackson. For shame. Why, oh, why Ubisoft? Why are you doing such a sneaky thing? The answer is simple. There is more, and Ubisoft wants you to wait just a little bit longer. What are you going to wait for? A meaty, action-filled, oh-my-gosh in-game video sequence that will stir your loins. In a good way. In a...dare we say it? Devilish way. So before you get too heated, I'll explain the context for such a teaser. This trailer is the first segment of Ubisoft's German Game Convention in-theater demonstration, which was also showed behind closed doors at E3, but never released to the public. Like at E3, as we understand it, Ubisoft has built a small theater in which to show the new Brothers in Arms: Hell's Kitchen game for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. The video is scripted, narrarated by Gearbox President Randy Pitchford and Retired Colonel John F. Antal, and provides a taste of the game's next-generation visuals, enemy AI, squad AI, gameplay scenarios, and of, course, all of the World War II details you could possibly ask for (plus a little more). While many key words were just used, one especially key phrase is "first segment." That means there is a second segment. The second part, which we'll provide for you exclusively, is the monster trailer. It's filled with burly action, impressive gameplay, and it's where, as they say in old '80s hamburger commericals, the beef is.

More Halo3 News Straight From Bungie

It's great in a way that Bungie releases these "weekly updates". No need to check out 50 different sites for a scoop; and you get guaranteed updates. This week's update is another one of them goodies. There's a lot of Halo 2 to discuss.

The two first Halo installments set the great foundation Master Chief currently stands on. Arguably one of the best exclusive titles for the Xbox line, Halo 3 is indeed packing a barrel full of promise; fans simply can't get enough info about it.

And what a game it's turning out to be. Sift through all the marketing hype and you'll see that the world once again is waiting with bated breath. And we got ourselves a few great news. I'll quote Frankie from Bungie.net

"I have been playing through Campaign mode purely for kicks. Exploring, in fact. There's lots of the feel of the original Halo, where you'll find yourself in a huge (dangerous) and intrinsically fascinating environment and just want to go tool around and check things out.

At this stage in development, the encounters are very carefully placed. Sometimes that means you're in frantic firefights (on a significantly bigger scale than in Halo 2, although all I will confirm numerically is at least one more Grunt.) but there's also time for exploratory reflection and the, "Oooh, maybe I can climb up there and check that thing out," sort of play.

Don't get me wrong. It's not GTA - it's still Halo, but there's a bigger feeling scope to some of these levels that has me reminiscing about the original game. And yet, conversely, I'm super excited about the new stuff. Using the debug menu, I dropped in a couple of items of new equipment. Maybe they’re for killing, maybe they’re for getting around, maybe they're for both. Who's to say"

Hmm...The new equipment definitely should be some new vehicle. We just can't wait to cause carnage with it. Secondly, like they said, there's lots of the feel of the original Halo, which means that they've accepted that Halo 2 was missing something. Great, at least they know what they have to fix!

While Halo 3 is coming out, we're sure there's a large contingent of PC gamers who want to get their hands on Halo 2 on their PC. Stay tuned because they're gonna be releasing some info next week. So until then, keep waiting.

GC 2006: SEGA Serves Up New Virtua Tennis 3 Info

SEGA has announced that the latest game in its acclaimed Virtua Tennis series is set to hit PSP and PC, alongside previously announced Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, when released early next year.
What's more, the company has revealed new gameplay details, including a brand new version of the game's World Tour Mode. With 10 new mini-games plus two old favourites, players can hone their skills via the player creation module in a bid to be World No. 1. Another addition, Court Games, adds a new string in the series' mulitplayer bow. Court Games are 'quirky variants' of Virtua Tennis 3's mini-games, playable against up to three human opponents. Finally, there's the addition of five set matches, rounding off the game's comprehensive feature list.

That's not all though. SEGA has secured the rights to a whole bunch of real-life tennis superstars who'll be making an appearance in the game. Heading up the women's roster is Amelie Mauresmo, 2006 Wimbledon Champion and World No. 1. Playing alongside are Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams and Martina Hingis. Nicole Vaidisova, Lindsay Davenport and Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova complete the line-up of playable female figures.

On the men's front, top seed and four times Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer leads the way, while players can also play as, or challenge, World No.2 Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Tim Henman and Lleyton Hewitt. Games Industry Is 'Failing Women'??

The videogames industry is continuing to fail women by not producing suitable content, a senior executive at Electronic Arts (EA) has said.

David Gardner, chief operating officer for EA's worldwide studios, was speaking to a conference in Edinburgh.

He said: "We have all been talking about this for a long, long time."

EA's own research found that 40% of teenage girls played video games versus 90% of teenage boys and most girls lost interest in games within a year.

Viewing figures

"We are only reaching a small proportion - not only geographically but also genetically," said Mr Gardner.

He said if EA cracked the problem the firm "could add a billion dollars to its sales."

He said the industry had to learn from the film business.

"The movie industry doesn't just make films for boys.

"Star wars was the biggest film of all time until Titanic came along; Titanic became the biggest because women went to see it and women went to see it multiple times.

"Just boys saw Star Wars multiple times."

Mr Gardner said one of the biggest problems was that the content aimed at women gamers was not appealing.

"They don't want 'pink games'. They are not trying to play girly games where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears go shopping and put make-up on.

"Those kind of things have not been that successful."

But he said games such as The Sims and websites such as Pogo.com proved there was a market for women gamers.

"Most of the Sims players are girls - 70% are women under 25," he said.

"The Sims is really a game about relationships - and that's what girls want - they want relationships, they want to be able to chat."

The Sims, which is published by EA, is arguably the world's most successful game - with more than 40 million copies sold.

Mr Gardner said the industry needed to "create some mega hits in the girl space."

He added: "One of the things that is going to make games for girls happen is creative teams. It's going to be new people and experiments. Four of our 11 studios around the world are run by women. That's an important start.

"Investing in new and upcoming talent is critical."

Just Cause Development Diary Video

Christofer Sundberg, Founder and Creative Director of Avalanche Studios says that they decided on the name Avalanche because "snow is cool" and they are like "two thousand tons of cool moving very quickly." Ironically, he goes into details of their sizzling hot new game set in the tropical island of San Esperito where the Rico Rodriguez will have the bad guys for lunch, Just Cause.
Although he talks about the developments in the game rather casually, you'd get a lot of serious information on how far you can take the game and vice versa. The stunts, according to Sundberg, is the main feature of the game. As Rico Rodriguez you can use your parachute to parasail or skydive, jump from car to and from cars, cliffs even airplanes.
He further revealed that there are 300 side missions and bonus missions if you're not in the mood for the 21 story missions. He adds that what sets Just Cause apart from other titles is its tongue in cheek storyline. But of course, you don't want to hear everything from this article, so download the developer diary now for more information on Avalanche Studio's Just Cause.

Madden NFL 07 Review

A review of Madden NFL 07 for the Xbox 360 is like a critic giving an early opinion of a Star Wars movie; people are going to pay their entry fee regardless of what is said by the experts. Makes sense. Madden NFL 07 is one of the longest running franchises on consoles, and is also one of the most popular pre-orders, year-in and year-out. But the Xbox 360 version of Madden NFL 07 is, in ways, more important than last year’s Madden NFL 06 review, even though 06 was the first next-gen football title in existence. Everybody could tell that last year’s Madden game was rushed, with nary a game mode or extra feature in sight. Madden NFL 07 is different. Tiburon has had an extra year to learn the hardware, and to pack in the features and other goodies that are supposed to make the only pigskin game of the year a big hit. Everybody is curious to see what the sports gaming juggernaut did to make Madden NFL 07 a no-brainer; justifying pre-orders all over the states. An above average NCAA SKU this year has helped to convince some of the naysayers, but if you’re still on the fence about Madden NFL 07 (and don’t believe in the preorder), then read on for the X’s and O’s of EA’s hard hitter. Read the rest of the review at the following link. Its a long one................

Test Drive Unlimited Reviewed In This Month's OXM

Test Drive Unlimited has had a full review from OXM this month. Overall they loved the game and rated it 9 out of 10 (what a suprise...not)

The minuses:-

  • Slightly numb handling
  • Its not an arcade game nor sim
  • Slight pop-up issues when travelling at high speed

The pluses:-

  • Open ended gameplay
  • Looks stunning
  • Petrolheads dream

After 15 hours of solid gameplay, they had only completed 18% of the game, and this was without any particular explorering. Add on to this, the online side of the game (which wasnt enabled) and i think we have a game with a *** of alot of playability

The development of cars:

When you first start the game you rent a car. You rent this car until you can afford to buy one.

When you first buy a car you have the manufactures catalogue to choose from (Colours, trims, alloys etc...) However, as you progress through the game you'll unlock special tuners (You can upgrade cars in 3 stages) and also speicial paintshops (You can have absolutley ANY colour) So your car can truly become one of a kind!

This game sounds really really promising

OXM are also calling this the most detailed game ever!

Texas Hold 'em Hands-on

If ESPN is to be taken as the authority, poker is apparently a sport. Far be it from us to shy away from a little athletic activity, especially if it's in the form of a videogame. Thankfully, we've got a new workout partner coming in the form of Texas Hold'em Poker without even leaving our house. Microsoft plans to release the Xbox Live Arcade game this Wednesday, August 23. The full game will be free to download for the first 48 hours after release. Read the full preview at the following link.

EA Wields Unreal Engine 3

Electronic Arts has licensed Epic's Unreal Engine 3 for use on several next-generation games, putting the game giant on a growing list of developers -- including Microsoft, Silicon Knights, Namco, and Midway -- licensing the advanced engine.
Unreal Engine 3 is now part of the "variety of engines, tools, and technologies" EA uses to develop games. In an official announcement, the company praised Unreal Engine 3's "modular and extensive framework" to assist in next-gen development.
Not surprisingly, however, the company isn't yet saying which titles are getting the Unreal touch.
"At EA, we give our development teams the tools they need to make great games," commented Paul Lee, president of EA Studios. "We license cutting edge tools like the Unreal Engine 3 and combine them with our own systems to create state-of-the-art development technology."
EA built many of its recent titles using Renderware, a platform the company inherited with its purchase of developer Criterion in 2004.

Xbox 360 Vision Camera

The Xbox Live Vision Camera maybe due for release in October but gamers all over Europe are already looking forward to this exquisite bit of hardware. Above is a picture of the Xbox Live Vision Camera.

Call Of Duty 3 Xbox 360 Game Footage

IGN has released some gameplay videos of COD3 for the Xbox 360. Call Of Duty 3 is being made by Treyarch which is the same dev that made Call Of Duty 2: Big red one. The previous outing which is still a popular hit on Xbox live was made by Infinity Ward and a lot of gamers would prefer a game made by IW. But here are some in-game videos of COD3

FIFA 07: Sing When You're Winning

Electronic Arts has whipped another layer of cellophane off FIFA 07, revealing the game's 40-strong tracklisting, covering songs from all corners of the not-particularly-angular globe.
Highlights, for the Brits, include tracks by Muse and, er, Keane. Apparently High Fly by Epik also (to paraphrase someone in the office) rocks your mother so hard, her teeth will fly out. Oh and we quite like Polysics too.
All versions of FIFA 07 - that's for DS, GBA, GC, PS2, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360, PC and mobile - are set to hit European shelves on September 29. The full tracklisting can be scrutinised at the following link:
